The experience

You start in Sorrento and head toward Meta, passing through Sant'Agnello and Piano di Sorrento on the peninsula. The first real test comes at Meta: a 5 km climb at 4–5% gradient that takes you to the ridge of Teresinella, where State Road 163 begins. From there the road descends into the famous curves of the Amalfi coast: dozens of them, winding between the hills and the sea. You'll pass Positano, the pearl of the coast, where you stop for a few minutes to take it in, then Praiano, built on the slope above the water. The ride along the main road stays close to the Gulf of Salerno for 20 km, with a series of climbs and descents of 2–3 km each at 4–5% slopes.

Amalfi is the turnaround point. You stop to see the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea, walk through the characteristic alleys, and take in the panorama before heading back. The return follows the same route, retracing the climb out of Amalfi and the descent back to Sorrento. The full distance is about 60 km. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, as are bottled water, helmet rental and the bike itself. You pick your bike type (carbon road or electric) when you book, and if you choose the road bike you can specify your pedal preference (Look, Shimano or flat).

The tour runs 4 to 5 hours and is led by a guide who speaks English, Spanish or Italian. A minimum age of 16 applies. You'll need at least a moderate level of fitness for the climbs and the distance. The ride is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, cardiovascular concerns or pregnancy.

Is this one for you?Choose the electric bike if the climbs worry you. The motor handles the steep sections at Meta and between the coast towns, letting you focus on the views and the curves. The carbon road bike suits riders who want the full physical challenge and don't mind the 4–5% grades. It's lighter and more responsive on the descents.
