The experience
What makes a crater different from a canyon? A Machtesh (the Hebrew word for the crater formation here) exists only in the Negev desert, and Ramon Crater is the largest. A jeep is the only way to reach the trails that show you why. The tour starts from your hotel in Mitzpe Ramon and heads down into the crater on a 4x4 road, then leaves the pavement for rough mountain trails that climb to Mt. Gvanim, an observation point where the crater opens up in all directions. From there you see the full scale of it: the layered colors in the rock, the shapes carved by erosion, the whole 360-degree sweep of the landscape.
After Mt. Gvanim, the jeep crosses into Wadi Zochalim, reptiles valley, and then Wadi Gvanim, where you stop in the shade of Acacia trees. This is where the guide shows you the desert world: the plants that survive here, the wildlife that moves through it, the minerals in the earth you can touch. The route then follows the pipeline road across the crater floor, stops at Beerot campground for a break, and visits one of the rehabilitated quarries before climbing back out to the highway and returning to Mitzpe Ramon.
Your guide is certified by the Israeli ministry of tourism and speaks English. The jeep handles the steep grades and rocky ground. You sit inside and feel the terrain change beneath you. The tour tackles hard and rugged trails (this is not a smooth drive), but the vehicle and the guide's knowledge of where to go make it manageable for all fitness levels.

What is a Machtesh and why does it only exist in the Negev?
A Machtesh is a crater formation unique to the Negev desert in Israel. Ramon Crater is the largest one, carved by erosion into layers of colored rock and deep valleys. The geological structure creates the landscape you see from Mt. Gvanim during the tour.
How rough are the 4x4 trails, and can someone with no off-road experience do this?

What do you actually see and do at the stops along the way?
At Mt. Gvanim you stand at an observation point and see the panoramic crater views. At Wadi Zochalim and Wadi Gvanim you stop under Acacia trees, where the guide teaches you about desert plants, wildlife and the minerals in the earth you can touch. You also visit a rehabilitated quarry and stop at Beerot campground for refreshment.
