The experience
If you're staying near the border and want to see Petra without arranging the crossing yourself, this tour handles the meet-and-assist at Arava and drives you 120 km south to Wadi Musa. The Nabataean city sits 240 km south of Amman and was carved into reddish rock as the capital of a trade empire that grew rich on frankincense, myrrh and spices starting in the 1st century BC. The site was lost to the outside world for centuries before its rediscovery, and it's now one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
The day centers on four main sites: the Siq, a narrow canyon that opens into the Treasury facade; the Obelisk Tomb, a monumental carved structure; and the Calligraphy inscriptions. A local guide leads groups of fewer than five people directly at the site. Larger groups have a guide from the border onward. You'll walk through the carved passages and stand in front of monuments cut straight from the stone, with time to take in each one. Lunch is included partway through the day, and the air-conditioned vehicle waits between stops.
The full day runs 10 to 12 hours from the border crossing, so you're moving at a pace that lets you see the main attractions without rushing through them. Entrance fees to Petra are covered, and the tour is wheelchair accessible if you need it.
