The Experience

The museum entrance is a triangular prism of concrete and glass, designed by Moshe Safdie to cut straight through the mountain—one end cantilevering into open air, the other anchored deep in bedrock. You walk in and the light changes. A professional Yad Vashem guide meets your group (Friday mornings only) and hands out headsets so you can hear clearly as you move through nine galleries, each one a different chapter. The Auschwitz Album sits behind glass—original photographs, the only visual record of the process that led to mass murder at Auschwitz-Birkenau. You stand in front of it and the scale of what you're looking at settles in.

The tour moves through authentic Nazi propaganda, antisemitic board games from the 1930s, and then onto "Leszno Street," a reconstructed cobblestone street from the Warsaw Ghetto. Your guide narrates the context—how the restrictions tightened, how the ghettos formed, what daily life looked like before deportation. A copy of Schindler's List is there too. The pacing is deliberate; you're not rushed through. After two and a half hours, you reach the Hall of Names at the museum's end—a circular room with a domed ceiling where photographs of 600 men, women, and children are displayed. Below, in a pool of water cut deep into the bedrock, you see their reflections. It's designed to hit you in a specific way, and it does.

After the guided portion ends, you're free to walk the rest of Yad Vashem's grounds on your own—the memorial gardens, the outdoor exhibits, the archives. Some people stay another hour. The whole site is wheelchair accessible, and the museum itself is designed so you can move through it without strain. The headsets mean you don't have to strain to hear either, which matters when you're absorbing this much information in one morning.

What’s included

Your tour includes a professional Yad Vashem guide leading you through nine galleries, a headset so you can hear clearly, entry to the Holocaust History Museum, all taxes and fees, and gratuities.
