Step-by-step itinerary

Explore Caesarea's historic sites

  • Visit Caesarea Maritima Museum
  • Learn about Straton's Tower history
  • See ancient synagogues and churches
  • Walk along Caesarea Aqueduct beach

The experience

Two hours is enough to move through Caesarea's layered history without rushing. You start with the Caesarea Maritima Museum, where the greatest collection of archaeological finds from the site sits on display: marble sculptures, sarcophagi, coins, oil lamps, ceramics, and jewelry spanning the Roman, Herodian, Byzantine, Muslim, and Crusader periods. The guide walks you through what each artifact reveals about the people who lived here, and why Caesarea rose and fell across two millennia.

From there, the tour moves to the harbor ruins and the Aqueduct Beach. Herod the Great built both the city and its harbor between 22 and 10 BCE, and what remains (the ancient aqueduct running parallel to the water, the broken stone of the harbor itself) still shapes how the place looks and feels. The guide explains what made Caesarea matter: a regional capital under Rome and Byzantium, an early Christian center, then a Crusader stronghold, then abandoned after the Muslim conquest of 640. The stories are in the stones.

The tour is private, so the pace and the stops follow what interests you. Your guide speaks English or Hebrew and knows the city well enough to answer questions that come up as you walk. Public transportation runs nearby if you're staying in Tel Aviv or Haifa and don't have a car. The guide can advise on how to reach the meeting point.

Top questions

What languages is the tour guided in?

Live guide in English and Hebrew.

What's actually inside the Caesarea Maritima Museum?

The museum holds the greatest collection of artifacts excavated from Caesarea Maritima: marble sculptures, sarcophagi, coins, oil lamps, ceramics, jewelry, and mosaics from the Roman, Herodian, Byzantine, Muslim, and Crusader periods. Many pieces were discovered during formal archaeological digs. Others were found accidentally while people cultivated the land. The display also includes Jewish gravestones and items from the Caesarea Synagogue.

Is the Caesarea National Park included in this tour?

The tour does not include Caesarea National Park entrance fees. The guide will show you the harbor ruins and the Aqueduct Beach, but if you want to enter the national park itself, that ticket is separate.

How do I get to the meeting point if I'm staying in Tel Aviv or Haifa?

Caesarea sits roughly midway between Tel Aviv and Haifa. Public transportation options run to the area, and your guide can advise on the best route from your hotel. If you have a rental car, parking is available near the tour start.

What makes the Aqueduct Beach special?

The Aqueduct Beach is one of Israel's best beaches, and it's the only one where an ancient aqueduct (built over a thousand years ago to carry water to the old city) runs parallel to the water. The aqueduct no longer works, but it creates a distinctive backdrop and a tangible link to Caesarea's Roman past.
