The experience
Three hours takes you from the coloured streets of Killarney town into the quiet of Killarney National Park, where your Jarvey (the traditional name for a jaunting car driver) steers you past the highest mountain peaks in Ireland. You'll see the country's last remaining herd of Red Deer moving through the Oak Woodland, and the guide unfolds the park's history as you travel the lakes' edge. The jaunting car is the old way of moving through this landscape. It lets you sit at the pace of the horse and take in the sights without the noise of an engine.
A short stop at Ross Castle sits you in front of the 15th-century fortress on the edge of Lough Léin. Your Jarvey tells the stories woven into its stones (tales of conflict and the castle's place in Irish history), while you stand in the shadow of the walls. St. Mary's Cathedral passes during the route as well, another landmark the guide brings into focus as you move through the town.
The tour ends in the Grand Foyer, where afternoon tea has been served since Victorian times. You settle into the spacious room and eat finger sandwiches, freshly baked fruit scones and plain scones with clotted cream and jam, a selection of pastries and banana bread, all washed down with freshly brewed tea or coffee. It's the formal close to a morning spent outdoors on the car.

Is this one for you?The jaunting car pace suits anyone who wants to absorb the landscape without rushing. You move at the horse's speed, which gives you time to spot the Red Deer and listen to the guide's stories about the park and the castle. If you prefer a faster route through the sights, a motorized tour would cover more ground in the same time.
