Follow the trail on horseback past Ireland's largest lake and through a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

A 2-hour guided horseback ride through Killarney National Park takes you into the Knockreer Estate and past Lough Lein, the largest of the park's three lakes. The stables operate year-round from 9am daily, and all groups are guided with instruction tailored to beginner, intermediate and experienced riders. Horse, helmet and boots are included; children must be at least 8 years old, and riders need to arrive 30 minutes early to prepare.

The Experience

The ride starts at the stables in Killarney and heads north into the Knockreer Estate, where the trail opens onto views of soaring mountains and rolling hills. You'll pass Lough Lein, the largest of Killarney's three lakes, and move through areas of the park designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981. The terrain mixes open ground and wooded sections, and the guide matches each rider to a horse suited to their height, weight and experience level—so beginners get a calm mount and experienced riders get something with more responsiveness.

All levels are catered for, which means the pace and the stops adjust to who is riding. If you arrive without your own gear, the stables provide a riding helmet and boots. The guide stays with the group throughout, and the route is fixed so you know what to expect: no surprises, no scrambling to keep up or hold back. Groups stay under 16 riders, so the trail doesn't feel crowded.

You need to be able to mount a horse with relative ease and have no medical conditions worsened by riding. There's a maximum weight limit of 127kg (280lbs). Arrive at least 30 minutes before the start time—the ride leaves on schedule and doesn't wait for latecomers. The stables are open all year, so you can book a morning slot in any season.

What’s included

  • Horse, riding helmet, and boots.
  • a guide for the full 2-hour ride.
  • instruction tailored to your experience level, whether you're a beginner or have 15+ years of regular riding.

Top questions

Can I ride if I've never been on a horse before?

Yes—the stables cater to all levels, from complete beginners to experienced riders. The guide will match you with a suitable horse and lead the group at a pace everyone can manage.

What is Lough Lein and why is it part of this ride?

Lough Lein is the largest of Killarney National Park's three lakes. The trail passes it on the way through the Knockreer Estate, so you ride alongside the water with mountain views beyond.

What happens if I don't have riding boots or a helmet?

The stables provide both a riding helmet and boots for riders who don't have their own, so you don't need to bring or buy them.

How long is the actual riding time, and what's the 30-minute arrival window for?

The ride itself lasts 2 hours. You're asked to arrive 30 minutes early so the staff can fit you with a helmet and boots, assess your height and weight for horse selection, and brief you on the trail before departure.

Can children ride, and are there any age restrictions?

Children can ride from age 8 onwards. When you book, provide their age so the stables can select a horse matched to their size and ability.

Is the Knockreer Estate part of Killarney National Park?

The Knockreer Estate sits north of Lough Lein within Killarney National Park, which was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981. The riding trail takes you through both the estate and surrounding areas of the park.
