The experience

I’ll be honest, I signed up for this Irish dance experience in Galway mostly out of curiosity (and maybe a little bit of peer pressure from my travel buddy). We’d just wandered through the Latin Quarter, still smelling like rain and coffee, when we found ourselves inside this cozy studio. The floor creaked a little under our shoes. Our guide, she said to call her Aisling, welcomed us with this big grin and a “Ready to give it a lash?” I was nervous but also kind of excited, which is not how I usually feel about dancing in front of strangers.

The first few steps felt awkward: my feet didn’t want to listen at all. But Aisling showed us three styles: the fancy Riverdance one (which looks impossible on TV), an older Sean Nós style that’s more relaxed and sort of shuffly, and then céilí group dancing where we all ended up laughing at ourselves. There was this moment when the fiddler started playing live: honestly, I got goosebumps. The rhythm just gets into your bones. At one point I messed up completely and Aisling winked, saying even pros trip sometimes. That made it easier somehow.

I still think about how everyone cheered each other on, even the shyest folks were smiling by the end. It wasn’t just about learning steps. It felt like being let in on something local and joyful, right there in Galway city. My legs were tired after 90 minutes but I left humming the tunes under my breath, wishing I could bottle that feeling for later. So yeah, if you’re even half-curious about Irish dancing (or just want to do something silly and fun), this is worth it.
