The Experience

“You know, the Vikings called it Dubh Linn — black pool,” our guide Tom said, nodding toward the mossy stones behind Dublin Castle. I’d never really thought about where the city’s name came from until that moment. The air smelled like wet leaves and old stone, and somewhere nearby I heard a gull squawk — not exactly what I pictured for a medieval walking tour in Dublin, but it fit somehow. We were just three friends and Tom, who seemed to know every odd fact about these streets.

We ducked into the Chester Beatty Library (the only stop we actually went inside), and honestly, I could’ve spent hours there. The manuscripts looked almost too delicate for this world — gold leaf shimmering under glass cases. Outside again, Tom pointed out the old city walls and told us how they’d once kept out more than just bad weather. It was drizzling by then (of course), but he handed us an umbrella without missing a beat. My shoes squeaked on slick cobbles as we wandered past Christ Church Cathedral — apparently Strongbow is buried there? Still not sure if I believe all of Tom’s stories, but he made them sound real enough.

In the Liberties neighborhood, you get this mash-up of old brickwork and new cafés; someone was singing outside a pub even though it was barely noon. We stopped at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for an external look — there’s a little garden out front where kids were chasing pigeons and my friend tried to snap a photo before her phone fogged up. The last stop was St. Audoen’s Church, which Tom called “the oldest in Dublin.” He let us ring one of the bells (well, sort of — it was more like touching cold metal than anything musical). I still think about that sound echoing off the walls.
