The experience

The evening starts on the beach with an introduction to bioluminescence: the science behind it and the folklore woven through West Cork's history. Once darkness settles, you'll pull on a wetsuit, grab a swim buoy fitted with lights tuned to a specific wavelength, and wade into the water close to shore. The glow surrounds you as you move through it. The experience depends on conditions, but participants consistently call it a highlight of their time in Ireland. You stay in water shallow enough to stand in or within 10 meters of the shoreline, though you do need to swim confidently.

After the swim, the night doesn't end. You'll head back to the sand where a fire pit waits, casting warmth across the beach. Wrapped in blankets, you'll sip herbal tea and a snack while guides and fellow swimmers share stories: of the sea, the land, and the people who've lived here. Two guides are always present, keeping the group to eight people maximum.

What’s included

  • Wetsuits in various sizes.
