The experience
This walk takes you into the working workshops where the crafts that built Taj Mahal still happen by hand. You start at one of the oldest zardozi workshops (gold embroidery so fine it takes months to complete a single piece), and the artisans show you how the thread catches light and how each stitch locks into the next. From there you move to a marble inlay workshop run by descendants of the artisans who worked on the Taj Mahal itself, where they fit semi-precious stones into marble with precision that looks impossible until you watch it happen. The walk stays in the 17th-century lanes around the monument, away from the main tourist routes.
You'll also step into households where people make fresh flower garlands and body jewelry (work that changes with the seasons and with what blooms), and visit a three-generation marble prachinkari workshop where the connection to the older pietra dura craft is still visible in the patterns. The last stop is a home where carpet weaving happens, and you see how the designs have shifted over time as different communities have worked side by side. At each place, the guide explains the history and the craft itself, not just the story. You can buy directly from the makers, which means the prices are what they charge each other, not what a shop adds on top.
The walk is two hours on foot through narrow lanes, so wear shoes you can walk in. A live guide in English or Hindi leads the group. If you book the cab or tuk-tuk option, pickup and drop-off are included. Public transport stops are also nearby if you prefer to meet the guide at the starting point.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and Hindi.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (10 to 14 years): free. Children under 10 can't be included in the booking.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is zardozi embroidery and why is it connected to Taj Mahal?
Zardozi is gold thread embroidery that became a signature craft in Agra in the 17th century when artisans from across the world settled here to work on the Taj Mahal and other monuments. The workshops you visit still use the same techniques (wrapping real gold thread around silk cores and stitching it into fabric), and the oldest ones have been operating for centuries.
Can I buy things directly from the artisans, and will the prices be lower than shops?
Yes, you buy directly from the craftspeople in their workshops. The prices are what they charge themselves, not marked up by a middleman or a store, so you'll pay less than you would in a tourist shop for the same piece.
How long does the walk take and how much walking is involved?
The walk is two hours total, spent moving through the lanes between workshops and spending time inside each one watching the artisans work. It's on foot through narrow streets, so comfortable walking shoes are important.
Is pickup from my hotel included, or do I need to arrange my own transport?
Pickup and drop-off are included if you book the cab or tuk-tuk option. If you book the walk alone, you'll meet the guide at the starting point. Public transport stops are nearby.
