The experience
The Statue of Unity rises 182 metres (nearly double the height of the Statue of Liberty), and took three and a half years, 3,000 workers and 300 engineers to complete. Built with 70,000 tonnes of cement, 18,500 tonnes of reinforcement steel and 1,700 metric tonnes of bronze, it commemorates Sardar Patel's integration of more than 500 princely states into the Union of India after independence. A 30-second elevator ride carries you to a viewing gallery at 153 metres, where you stand above the Sardar Sarovar Dam, its reservoir, and the Satpura and Vindhya mountains stretching across the horizon.
The day also takes in the Sardar Sarovar Dam itself, the third highest concrete dam in India at 163 metres, which frames views of the same mountain ranges from ground level. Then comes the Valley of Flowers, a 24-acre garden along the Narmada riverbank planted with more than 2.2 million flowering plants: ornamental flowers, trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers and creepers in various shades. Lunch is included, and your private car and English-speaking guide stay with you throughout. Hotel pickup and drop-off are arranged from Ahmedabad, and the tour runs 14 hours door to door.
Five Senses Tours, the operator, is recognized by India's Ministry of Tourism and belongs to the Indian Association of Tour Operators. The company hires local guides and partners with local businesses to keep travel spending in the region.
