The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your Bhopal hotel and a 60-kilometer drive to Sanchi, where you'll spend time on a serene hill surrounded by stupas, monasteries, temples and pillars spanning nearly fifteen centuries. The Sanchi Stupa itself, built by Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, holds the relics of Buddha and his followers and stands as one of the finest examples of Buddhist art and architecture. What sets Sanchi apart is how Buddha is represented, not through human figures, but through symbols, a distinctive approach that shaped the site's visual language.

From Sanchi, the tour moves to Udaygiri Caves, an early Hindu ritual site extensively carved and reworked under Chandragupta II during the late 4th and 5th centuries AD. The caves contain rock-shelters, petroglyphs, ruined buildings, inscriptions, water systems and fortifications, though much remains only partially excavated. The two sites represent different faiths and eras of Indian history, making the pairing a study in how religious practice shaped architecture across centuries.

After exploring both sites, you'll drive back to Bhopal for hotel drop-off. Bottled water is provided in the car throughout the day. If you select the guide option, an English speaker will accompany you. Entrance fees to both monuments and lunch can be added at checkout depending on which package you choose.
