The experience
The drive from Pune climbs into the Western Ghats, a region that draws monsoon lovers and mountain seekers to Lonavala year-round. Your guide meets you at your hotel and travels with you in a private air-conditioned vehicle, stopping first at Shree Narayani Dham, a white marble temple built in 2002 in the Dhankawadi area. The main shrine honors the goddess Narayani, with smaller shrines to Ganapathi and Hanuman flanking it. A four-storey entrance and fountains line the approach. From there the route moves to Bhaja Caves, a group of 22 rock-cut Buddhist caves dating to the 2nd century BC, set 400 feet above the village on an ancient trade route that once ran from the Arabian Sea into the Deccan Plateau.
The afternoon centers on three vantage points and water features. Bhushi Dam, built in the 1860s to supply water for the Great Indian Peninsular Railway, sits on the Indrayani River against scenic hilly terrain. During monsoon, water flows over a series of steps and accessible rocky ground, creating a waterfall near the dam itself. Lion's Point, midway between Bhushi Dam and Aamby Valley, offers panoramic views of dozens of small waterfalls, lush green hills and lakes during the rainy season. The wind is strong here and sunrise and sunset views draw photographers. The final stop is Lohagad Fort, which rises to 1,033 meters above sea level and sits 52 kilometers northwest of Pune, connected to the neighboring Visapur Fort by a small range.
Your guide speaks English throughout the day. Pickup and drop-off at your hotel, all toll taxes and parking fees are included. You choose between a four-seater or six-seater vehicle at checkout depending on your group size. Bring a raincoat or umbrella, extra clothes, a towel and trekking shoes, as the terrain and weather shift across the five stops. The tour suits all fitness levels, though it is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health or for pregnant travelers.
