The experience
Your driver picks you up from your hotel at 9am and heads into Old Delhi, where the first stop is Jama Masjid, a Mughal-era mosque and the second-largest in India. From there you travel to New Delhi proper to visit Akshardham temple, which holds the title of world's largest Hindu temple: the scale and detail of the place warrant time to take it in. Next comes Lotus Temple, one of the most visited temples globally, known for its distinctive white marble petals.
The tour continues to Birla Mandir (Lakshmi Narayan temple) and ends at Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, the Sikh gurdwara in central Delhi. At the gurdwara you'll learn about Sikhism and the community kitchen (langar) that operates there. Between the major stops, you'll ride in a rickshaw through the narrow lanes of Old Delhi (the only way to move through that part of the city) to get a sense of how the heritage area actually works. Your guide speaks English, Spanish, Italian, French or another language, depending on your booking. The driver drops you back at your hotel at the end of the day.
Dress code is smart casual. Shoes come off at all places of worship, and knees and shoulders need to be covered. Comfortable walking shoes or slippers are essential since you'll be moving between sites and walking through temple grounds. The tour requires at least a moderate level of fitness because of the walking and the heat, and it's not recommended for pregnant travelers.
