The Experience
We were already halfway down Abade Faria Street when I realized how much I’d underestimated Margao. The guide—her name was Sushma—paused in front of a pale yellow mansion with faded blue shutters and pointed at what looked like tiny scars in the wall. “Bullet holes,” she said, almost casually. There was a weird silence while we all stared, trying to imagine what had happened here during the Margao Massacre. I caught the smell of baking bread drifting over from somewhere nearby and suddenly felt hungry and curious at the same time.
The Holy Spirit Church was next, and it really does feel older than anything else around—450 years or so, Sushma said, but it’s not just about the age. She told us about this strange annual phenomenon that happens here (I won’t spoil it), and I could see her eyes light up talking about it. Inside, the cool air smelled faintly of incense and stone dust. Someone was singing softly near the altar—just for themselves, I think—which made me pause longer than I meant to.
We wandered down lanes painted every color you can imagine—peeling pinks, turquoise that looks almost too bright in the sun—and stopped at a bakery where we tried some Goan sweets I still can’t pronounce right (Li laughed when I tried). The textures were all crumbly and sweet-salty; honestly, I could’ve eaten ten more. Our last stop was this little spot for local delicacies—nothing fancy but everyone seemed to know each other there. It felt like being let in on a secret that isn’t really a secret if you’re from Margao.
