The Experience

I still remember the first turn we took after Char Dukan—one minute it was just us and the quiet, then suddenly a burst of birdsong from somewhere above the pines. Walking the upper Landour circuit (they call it the chakkar), you get these glimpses of Mussoorie far below—tiny houses clinging to green hillsides. Sandeep had stories for every corner: about British officers, musicians who’d stayed here, even which bakery had the best cinnamon roll (he was right). We passed Lal Tibba just as clouds started rolling in, covering everything for a few minutes. It felt like being inside a storybook fog—couldn’t see more than a few meters ahead but you could hear laughter from Sisters Bazaar around the bend.

I didn’t expect how much I’d love those quiet bits between sights—the crunch of gravel underfoot or catching someone’s chai brewing through an open window. There’s something about walking here that slows you down without trying. The whole route is just 3 km but honestly, we stretched it out to nearly three hours because we kept stopping to look at old churches or try to guess which trees were deodars (I got it wrong every time). If you can go on a weekday morning like we did, do it—the town feels half-asleep and somehow more itself.
