The experience

You start at a meeting point sent to you by GPS after booking, where your local guide waits. The tour moves through Dalhousie Square (also called BBD Bagh), the colonial administrative heart where the Governor's Palace, High Court, St. John's Church, GPO and Writers' Building stand as reminders of British rule. From there you walk to Mullick Ghat Flower Market, one of Asia's largest, where vendors sell thousands of blooms in tight rows. The colors and smell are the point. You cross the Howrah Bridge on foot, an engineering marvel and one of the world's busiest cantilever bridges, then board a 30-minute ferry on the Hooghly River.

The ferry takes you to Kumartuli, the potter's quarter, where you watch artisans hand-craft clay idols for festivals and export. From there the route leads to College Street, the largest book market in India, where narrow stalls overflow with new and used books and readers hunt for rare finds. You finish at the Indian Coffee House, a legendary gathering spot where you sit down for coffee and snacks. The whole walk covers roughly 2.5 to 3 kilometers with frequent stops to rest, look at buildings and listen to stories. It is designed to feel unhurried, not rushed.

The tour uses public transportation throughout: yellow taxis, auto-rickshaws, buses, the metro and ferries. This is how locals move through the city, so you experience Kolkata the way residents do rather than from a tour bus. The guide adjusts the route if heavy rain arrives, using covered verandas and building interiors to keep you comfortable. Restroom stops are pre-scouted and spaced along the way. Groups stay small, no more than 6 people, so you can hear the guide clearly and move safely through crowded streets.

Kumartuli is a traditional potter's quarter in northern Kolkata where artisans hand-craft clay idols for festivals and for export to other countries. You watch them work during the tour.

Can I visit the Victoria Memorial museum, or just the gardens?

Victoria Memorial garden entry is included in the tour price. Museum entry is optional and costs extra (Indian tourists INR 50, foreign tourists a different rate). Your guide can arrange it if you choose. The museum is closed Mondays.

Can I take this tour if I'm pregnant or use a wheelchair?

The tour is not recommended for pregnant travelers. It is also not wheelchair or stroller accessible due to the uneven footpaths and high curbs of the historic neighborhoods.
