The experience

Your guide picks you up from your hotel and heads straight to the Flower Market, one of the country's largest. You spend roughly an hour here with your guide pointing out the best angles and light as vendors sell flowers in narrow lanes: the chaos and color that make Kolkata's street photography distinctive. From there, Sudder Street comes next: hand-pulled rickshaws, yellow taxis, food carts, and the flea market mix of clothes and jewelry that fills the frame. The street is built for the camera.

College Street, the world's largest secondhand book market, is where you spend about 45 minutes walking past hundreds of shops stacked floor to ceiling with books. After that, you break for lunch at a local multi-cuisine restaurant (you pay here) before moving to Park Street, a 40-minute stop that shows you Kolkata's split personality: chic cafes and bars alongside colonial architecture. Your last stop is Victoria Memorial, a century-old monument with elaborate European architecture set in 64 acres of grounds and gardens. Once you've finished shooting there, your guide drops you back at your hotel.

The tour runs eight hours total and covers the city's markets, streets and monuments in a single day. Transport throughout is in an air-conditioned car with a driver, and your guide speaks English and stays with you the whole time. Parking, tolls, fuel and all transport costs are included in the price.

Is this one for you?You photograph the tour yourself with your own camera: the guide navigates you through the best spots and light, but you frame and shoot. This works for anyone with a camera and a moderate level of fitness for walking through crowded markets and streets for a full day. It's not a passive sightseeing tour where someone else does the work.
