experience

What’s the experience like?

The drive from Guwahati to Kaziranga is longer than I expected — about four and a half hours — but honestly, it’s the kind of road where you just watch the world shift outside your window. Our driver, Mr. Das, pointed out tea gardens and tiny roadside chai stalls (I wish we’d stopped for one). By the time we reached our hotel near the park, the air smelled different — earthier, almost sweet with grass. I barely slept because I kept thinking about seeing rhinos in real life.

We were up before sunrise for the first Kaziranga safari. The jeep was cold at 5:30am and my hands went numb gripping the rails, but then we saw our first one-horned rhinoceros just standing there in the mist. Our guide Raju whispered facts about their history here — he seemed proud, like they were family. There were wild buffalo too, and a herd of elephants moving so quietly it felt unreal. At one point a stork flapped overhead and Raju tried to teach me its Assamese name; I probably butchered it because he laughed.

After breakfast back at the hotel (the tea tasted stronger than usual), we visited a Karbi village nearby. The women weaving outside their homes smiled at us but didn’t say much — I guess tourists come through often. Later we wandered through those endless tea gardens; I tried to pick a leaf but got scolded gently by an old man who said something about “only experts.” Fair enough.

The afternoon jeep safari was louder — more people, more chatter — but still wild in its own way. We didn’t see any tigers (Raju said you need luck for that), but honestly just rolling through those tall grasses with birds everywhere was enough for me. On the way back to Guwahati the next day, I kept replaying that silent moment with the rhino in my head. Still gives me chills.
