Kayaking Paravur Backwaters: Mangrove forest & railway bridge
Paddle through mangrove tunnels under the Railway Bridge, then drift across shifting sandbars where the backwaters meet the sea.
Kayaking in Paravur Backwaters is a 4-hour paddle through a sheltered lagoon near Varkala in southern Kerala, where you operate a sit-on-top kayak along a 10 km route that crosses both saltwater and freshwater zones. A guide paddles alongside you the entire time, and the lake's shallow depth, never more than 10 feet, keeps you oriented and safe. The route passes under the Railway Bridge, stops at Chithan Thampuran Temple Island, winds through mangrove forest canals, and ends at Black Devil Snail Sandbar before returning to the launch point.

The experience
The paddling center sits on a narrow sandbar wedged between the Arabian Sea and Paravur Backwaters, a setup that lets you start in saltwater and paddle east into freshwater on the same trip without the tidal churn of open ocean. After you choose a life jacket and get basic kayaking instruction on shore, your guide launches alongside you in another kayak. Within 30 to 45 minutes of paddling, you reach the Railway Bridge. You pass under it and aim for Chithan Thampuran Temple Island, a small stop to rest and look around.
From there, another 45 to 60 minutes of paddling takes you east into the tropical mangrove forest. You enter the island and paddle through narrow canals roofed by mangrove branches, a passage that feels enclosed and quiet. On the way back, you cross Black Devil Snail Sandbar, a sand flat that shifts shape with wind and tide: a place to swim or rest before the final 25 to 30 minutes back to the launch point. The whole route stays inside waters no wider than 1 km, so you never lose sight of land or your bearings.
The trip runs rain or shine unless wind or lightning makes paddling unsafe. Bring a change of clothes and dress for the weather. Showers are available at the center before you head back. A guide speaks English, Hindi, Tamil or Malayalam, and the minimum independent paddler age is 10, though children must have an adult in their kayak.

Is this one for you?The launch point is a sandbar you reach on foot, no vehicle needed, so if you're staying in Varkala or Kollam without a car, you can get there by local transport and start paddling the same morning. The shallow, sheltered water and constant guide presence mean you don't need paddling experience, only moderate fitness and comfort in a boat.
