Step-by-step itinerary
Visit palace and Kanyakumari beach
- Explore Padmanabhapuram Palace
- Travel to Kanyakumari beach
- Take ferry to Vivekananda Rock
- See Thiruvalluvar Statue
- Enjoy sunrise or sunset views
The experience
The day starts at Padmanabhapuram palace, the largest wooden palace in all of Asia. Built around 1601 by Iravi Varma Kulasekhara Perumal, it spreads across 6.5 acres and contains several structures: the King's Council Chamber, a performance hall, a four-storey mansion at the centre, and the Southern Palace. The complex is maintained by the Kerala Archaeology Department and is older than Rambagh Palace in Rajasthan. You walk through rooms and courtyards that have stood for over four centuries, seeing how the palace was constructed and arranged.
After the palace, the tour moves to Kanyakumari beach at the southern tip of the Indian subcontinent. The town sits where three bodies of water meet, bordered on three sides by the sea and known since the Sangam period: Marco Polo and Ptolemy both recorded it. A ferry ride takes you out to Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the 41-metre Thiruvalluvar statue offshore. The sunrise and sunset here are the draws: the light hits the water differently depending on the time of day, and the rock and statue stand against that backdrop.
Private transportation moves you between sites in an air-conditioned vehicle. Entry to the palace and the ferry are included, as is bottled water and parking. A guide who speaks English, Tamil or Malayalam travels with you and can explain what you are seeing at each stop. The full day takes ten hours from pickup to return.

What is Padmanabhapuram palace and why is it worth seeing?
Padmanabhapuram palace is the largest wooden palace in Asia, built around 1601 and spread across 6.5 acres in the Kanyakumari district of Tamil Nadu. It contains the King's Council Chamber, a performance hall, a four-storey central mansion and the Southern Palace, all maintained by the Kerala Archaeology Department. The palace is older than Rambagh Palace in Rajasthan and stands as an architectural record of Travancore-era construction.
Do I get to see Vivekananda Rock and the Thiruvalluvar statue, or just pass by them?
A ferry ride is included in the tour, so you travel out to both Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar statue. The 41-metre statue stands on the shore, and you see both landmarks from the water and up close. The ferry access lets you experience the offshore sites rather than view them from a distance.
What time of day does the tour visit Kanyakumari beach for the sunrise or sunset?
The itinerary does not fix the departure time, so the timing of your beach visit depends on when your tour starts. Sunrise and sunset are both described as spectacular at Kanyakumari, so you can choose a departure time that aligns with whichever you prefer to see.
Is lunch provided during the ten-hour day?
Lunch is not included in the tour. Bottled water is provided, and you will have time at Kanyakumari beach, but you will need to arrange a meal separately or bring food with you.
