Summary

Sunset camel ride in Rajasthan desert with village stop and dinner

You’ll ride your own camel across Rajasthan’s sand dunes from Jaisalmer, stopping at Kuldhara village before settling in for sunset snacks on the dunes. Enjoy a freshly cooked local dinner under open skies before heading back by jeep. It’s a few hours that’ll stay with you long after you shake out your shoes.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We were already bouncing a bit by the time we left Jaisalmer, squeezed into a jeep with the windows down — you could smell the dust before you even saw the sand. Our guide, Arjun, grinned and told us stories about the old Kuldhara village as we rattled along. When we finally stepped out at the edge of the dunes, I remember thinking how quiet it suddenly got — just wind and that soft crunch underfoot. The camels were waiting, all tall and patient-looking. Mine was called Raju. He turned his head when I tried to say hello (maybe he understood me?).

The ride itself was both slower and wobblier than I’d pictured — you have to sort of trust your body to sway along. Arjun kept checking in on us, making sure no one fell behind or lost a sandal (it happens). We passed these little tufts of grass poking through the sand and sometimes a stray goat would wander by. The sun started dropping fast; everything turned gold for a while. Someone handed around chai and snacks while we sat together on an old rug watching the sky change colors. I didn’t expect to feel so calm out there — just sitting quietly with strangers who felt like friends for an hour.

Dinner was cooked right there over hot coals — lentils, flatbread, something spicy that made my nose run but tasted perfect after all that dry air. There was this moment where everyone went quiet looking up at the first stars coming out; even Arjun stopped talking for once. Then it was back in the jeep for the ride home to Jaisalmer, still brushing sand off my shoes and thinking about how different everything looked in moonlight. I still think about that view sometimes when it gets noisy at home.
