The experience

Amber Fort sits 12 km outside Jaipur, a historic town built around a majestic fort with intricate courtyards, grand halls and ornate palaces. The tuk-tuk takes you through the complex, then on to Panna Meena ka Kund, an eight-story stepwell from the 16th century with steps on three sides and a multi-storied balcony facing the fourth. The stepwell opens at 7 am and stays open until 6 pm, so you can move through it without the afternoon crowds.

Jal Mahal floats in the middle of Man Sagar Lake: a five-story palace built as a hunting lodge, now mostly submerged so only the top story rises above the water. From there the route moves into the city proper: Hawa Mahal, the Palace of Breeze, a five-story red and pink sandstone structure built in 1799 with 953 small windows that give it a honeycomb look and keep the interior chambers cool year-round. City Palace sits in the heart of Jaipur, blending Rajput and Mughal styles, with sprawling gardens, courtyards and a museum holding royal garments from Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II. Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observatory from 1734, houses the world's largest stone sundial and 18 other instruments. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site and opens at 9:30 am daily.

Albert Hall Museum, the oldest in Rajasthan, holds paintings, ivory items, sculptures and an Egyptian mummy, with evening hours until 10 pm if the schedule allows. The final stop is Galtaji Monkey Temple, a hilltop sanctuary filled with playful monkeys, sacred water tanks and views over the surrounding landscape. Your driver handles the navigation and timing.
