The experience

You start from your hotel, the airport or the railway station, picked up in a private AC vehicle. The tour runs eight hours and moves through Bhubaneswar's religious landmarks in sequence: the Lingaraj temple (entry restricted to Hindu visitors), Bindu Sagar Lake, and a run of smaller temples (Kedar Gouri, Mukteswar, Brahmeswar and Bhaskareswar) each one a different era of stone carving and architectural detail. Your guide walks you through the grounds and explains what you're standing in front of, but the pace is yours to set.

The afternoon takes you outside the city center to Dhauli Hill, where the Shanti Stupa, a white Buddhist peace pagoda, sits on a ridge overlooking the plains. From there you move to the Khandagiri and Udayagiri Jain Caves, two hillside complexes carved into the rock face centuries ago. You climb into the cave monasteries and see the carved chambers where monks lived. The Regional Museum of Natural History, the Pathani Samanta Planetarium and the Odisha State Museum round out the stops, depending on time and your interest. Nicco Park is also on the itinerary if the day allows.
