You’ll get to explore ancient temples carved into solid rock on Elephanta Island, just a short ferry ride from Mumbai. This tour mixes history, local stories, and scenic views—perfect if you want something different from city life.
The morning air at the Gateway of India felt a bit salty, even before the crowds picked up. Our driver dropped us right at the entrance, and I could already spot the line for the Elephanta Island ferry—mostly locals chatting in Marathi, a few travelers like us clutching cameras. The boat ride itself took about an hour; you’ll want to grab a seat by the window if you can, since there’s always a breeze and sometimes you catch sight of fishing boats weaving through the harbor.
Landing at Elephanta Island, there’s this old stone elephant sculpture near the jetty—our guide explained that’s how the Portuguese came up with the name. We walked up a shaded path lined with tiny stalls selling coconut water and postcards (the coconut guy had his radio playing Bollywood hits). The caves themselves are carved straight into basalt rock, dating back to somewhere between the 6th and 7th centuries. Cave 1 is massive—the main hall is cool and echoey, and you can see intricate carvings of Shiva that our guide pointed out were nearly 1,500 years old. It’s wild to think these survived so long. There are seven caves in total but Cave 1 really steals the show with its detailed sculptures.
After exploring, we caught the ferry back just as the sun started dipping behind Mumbai’s skyline. The city looked hazy from out on the water—a nice way to end it all before heading back to our hotel for some downtime.
The tour usually takes around half a day, including ferry rides and time spent exploring the caves.
You’ll need to walk uphill from the jetty to reach the caves—there are some steps but it’s manageable for most people with moderate fitness.
