The Experience

The first thing I noticed was the smell — cardamom and something frying — as we squeezed into the old lanes of Chandni Chowk. Our guide, Ritu, waved us over to a little stall for jalebi. Hot syrup stuck to my fingers and honestly, I didn’t care. There’s this constant hum in Old Delhi: scooters honking, vendors calling out prices, fabric brushing past your arm. I tried bargaining for bangles but got distracted by a rack of bright saris instead. Ritu just grinned and said “It’s all part of the game.”

We’d started the day with hotel pickup (our driver was early, which surprised me) and zipped through New Delhi in an air-conditioned car — thank god for that. We stopped whenever we wanted (lunch is whenever you’re hungry), tasted chaat that made my eyes water, and ended up with bags heavier than we planned. By the time we drove back toward our hotel, I was tired but oddly energized too. Still think about that view from the rickshaw seat sometimes.
