The experience
Four to five hours takes you through the places central to the Buddha's life and teaching. You start at the Dungeshwari Caves, where Siddhartha Gautama spent years in severe austerity searching for enlightenment, and your guide explains how this period led him toward the Middle Way. From there the tour moves through Sujata Stupa, dedicated to the woman who offered milk-rice to Siddhartha after his long fast and helped restore his strength at a turning point in his journey.
The Mahabodhi Temple marks the exact place where Siddhartha attained enlightenment and became the Buddha. The UNESCO-listed complex sits beside the sacred Bodhi Tree, believed to be a direct descendant of the original tree under which enlightenment occurred. Your guide brings you to both, and the tour leaves time for quiet reflection, prayer or meditation at one of Bodhgaya's most important sites. You also visit the Great Buddha Statue, an 80-foot meditation figure surrounded by smaller statues of his disciples, and the Indosan Nipponji Japanese Temple, built in traditional wooden style with artwork depicting scenes from the Buddha's life. The Metta Buddha monument, dedicated to the teaching of loving-kindness, offers another moment for peaceful reflection.
