The experience
Ujjain sits 55 kilometers from Indore and takes roughly 90 minutes to reach. Once there, you check into your hotel, then move through the city's major temples: Harsiddhi Mata Shakti Peeth, one of 51 sacred shrines of the goddess across India; the Bhartrihari caves carved into rock in the 11th century, where a learned sage came to meditate; Mangalnath Temple overlooking the Kshipra River, believed to be the birthplace of Mars; and Kal Bhairav Temple on the riverbank, where liquor is offered as a ritual gift to the deity. You also visit Ram Ghat, where Lord Ram performed a fire sacrifice during his exile, and Chintaman Ganesh Temple, which houses three forms of Ganesha in a single sanctum: said to remove worries, fulfill desires, and grant spiritual powers.
The evening centers on Mahakal Lok, a 920-meter corridor lit up after sunset along Rudra Sagar Lake. It holds 200 statues, eight forms of Lord Shiva for worship, murals from the Shiva Purana, and 108 pillars leading to Mahakaleshwar Temple itself, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The corridor also passes Sandipani Ashram, where the sage Sandipani taught Krishna and his companions. The ashram preserves a 6000-year-old Shivlinga and a stone numbered 1 to 100 believed carved by the guru himself.
On day two, you drive 145 kilometers to Omkareshwar, a sacred island shaped like the Om symbol, where the Narmada and Kaveri rivers meet. The Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga temple rises five stories, each floor holding a different deity, with a prayer hall supported by 60 carved stone pillars. You also visit Mamleshwar Temple on the southern bank, where around 1000 Shivalingas are planted for daily rituals and devotees can touch the Jyotirlinga directly. A holy dip in the Narmada River follows, along with a boat ride on its waters. You return to Indore the same evening, 80 kilometers away.
Day three offers optional visits to Khajrana Ganesh Mandir, built in the 18th century by Rani Ahilyabai Holkar; Kanch Mandir, the Glass Temple, where walls, ceilings and pillars are covered in glass mosaics and mirrors reflecting statues of Jain saints; and Rajwada, a seven-story palace blending Maratha, Mughal and French styles that once housed the Holkar dynasty. You check out and depart for your onward journey.
