Landmannalaugar & Hekla Volcano Monster Truck Tour
Drive across lava fields and into geothermal hot springs in a monster truck built for Iceland's backcountry.
A 9-hour private monster truck tour from Reykjavik through Landmannalaugar and Hekla Volcano, led by a driver/guide and limited to 10 people per vehicle. You'll drive off-road across lava fields, crater walls and colorful mountains, stop at the cobalt blue lake of Ljlotipollur, walk to Hjalparfoss Waterfall, and soak in a natural hot spring. Hotel pickup and drop-off and national park fees are included; the tour operates in all weather.
The Experience
Your driver/guide picks you up at your Reykjavik hotel between 8:30 and 9am and takes you to a 4x4 monster truck with 46-inch wheels, leather seats, air-conditioning and Wi-Fi. The vehicle is built for what comes next: nine hours of off-road and highway driving through terrain most cars cannot reach. You'll cross rivers, climb glittering crater walls, traverse lava fields and wind along colorful mountains where geothermal vents still steam the ground.
The route takes you through Landmannalaugar's highlands to Hekla Volcano, one of Iceland's most active geological features, and stops at Ljlotipollur, a crater lake so intensely blue it looks unreal against the dark volcanic rock. You'll see Frostastaoa Lake and walk to Hjalparfoss Waterfall, where two rivers meet and drop into a canyon. Between stops, your guide points out the geothermal activity and explains what the landscape tells you about Iceland's volcanic past. The day includes time in a natural hot spring—a chance to warm up after hours of driving and walking in the highlands.
The tour wraps around 6pm when you're back at your hotel. National park fees and the guide are already paid for, so there's no stopping to arrange entry or negotiate access at each site. The monster truck's size and suspension mean you're not bouncing over rocks in a cramped jeep; the leather seats and climate control matter on a nine-hour day. Bad weather doesn't cancel the tour—you just dress for it—so the highlands stay accessible even when conditions turn.

What's the difference between this monster truck and a regular 4x4 tour vehicle?
The monster truck has 46-inch wheels and is modified specifically for off-road terrain, allowing it to cross rivers and climb steep crater walls that standard vehicles cannot navigate. The interior includes leather seats, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi and GPS, so the ride itself is comfortable over a nine-hour day.
Can I actually soak in a hot spring on this tour, or is it just a quick stop?
You do get time to soak in a natural hot spring as part of the day. The tour includes this as a warming break during the highlands drive, so it's built into the schedule rather than a rushed photo stop.
What happens if the weather is bad on the day of my tour?
The tour operates in all weather conditions. You'll need to dress appropriately for wind, rain or cold, but the monster truck's capability and the guide's experience mean the highlands remain accessible even when conditions are rough.
How many people will be in the truck with me?
This is a private tour limited to a maximum of 10 people per monster truck. Your group books the vehicle together, so you're traveling with your own party, not mixed with strangers.
Does the tour include food or drinks?
Food and drinks are not included. You'll want to bring water and snacks for the nine-hour day, especially since you'll be active at several stops.
What is Ljlotipollur, and why is it worth seeing?
Ljlotipollur is a crater lake in Landmannalaugar known for its intensely cobalt blue water, created by the volcanic geology of the highlands. It's one of the visual highlights of the route and a stop where you'll have time to walk and photograph.
