The Experience
The tour runs 13 hours and starts with a drive to Haifoss, Iceland's fourth-highest waterfall at 122 meters, set in countryside with Granni waterfall nearby—this combination is unique to this day tour. From there you move into Landmannalaugar itself, where the landscape shifts to lava fields and rhyolite hills in shades of red, green and gold. The two-hour hike is optional; you can set your own pace on the trails or explore on your own and rejoin the group later.
Hnausapollur volcanic crater lake sits in the middle of the region, a turquoise pool formed when two volcanoes erupted 1200 years ago. The geothermal activity that shaped the landscape is still visible—steaming pools dot the hillsides as you walk. At the end of the day, before heading back, you soak in the natural hot springs to rest after the hiking.
