The experience

The tour leaves from Klaustur and heads into the highlands in a super jeep: a vehicle modified to handle rough mountain terrain and glacier roads. Your driver is a local guide who speaks English and shares the geology and history of the area as you travel. The group stays small, capped at 12 passengers, so the pace is built around individuals rather than a crowd moving through stops.

You hike on top of Laki, the central crater in the Lakagígar row, and take in the view across the volcanic landscape. Along the way you stop at Tjarnargígur crater and Fagrifoss waterfall (the name means literally "beautiful waterfall") to explore the surroundings. The day also includes a walk along the higher rim of Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, where you look down into the gorge and across to its cliffs while the river rushes below. A moderate amount of walking is involved, but the trails are marked and suitable for most people. You don't have to hike if you prefer not to.

The super jeep has heating and air conditioning, and the tour runs about eight hours total. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included for selected hotels in the area. Bring your own food and drinks for the day, as none are provided. The area is extremely sensitive. You must stay on marked trails at all times. Spring thaws can close mountain roads, so the operator reserves the right to alter routes or cancel if weather or road conditions demand it.

Top questions

Yes. Ticket types: Child (under 13).

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What is Lakagígar and why is it worth a full day?

Lakagígar is a row of volcanic craters in Vatnajokull National Park formed by a major eruption in the 18th century. The tour centers on hiking to the top of Laki, the central crater, where you stand inside the volcanic system and see the landscape it shaped. The day also reaches Fagrifoss waterfall and Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, so you experience multiple geological features in one route.

How much walking and hiking is actually involved?

A moderate amount of walking is involved, and the trails are marked and suitable for most people. You do hike to the top of Laki crater, but hiking is not necessary. You can choose not to hike and still see the other stops. Wear shoes suitable for uneven terrain.

Can I get to Lakagígar without booking a tour?

The area is in Vatnajokull National Park and requires a super jeep to reach because of the rough mountain roads and glacier terrain. A standard car cannot make the journey. The tour includes the specialized vehicle, a local guide, and hotel pickup, so you don't need to arrange transport separately.

What happens if the weather is bad or roads are closed?

The tour operates in most weather conditions, so you should dress appropriately for wind, rain and cold. However, spring thaws can close mountain roads in the highlands. The operator reserves the right to alter routes, change the itinerary or cancel the tour if weather or road conditions make travel unsafe.

Is food included, or do I need to bring my own?

Food and drinks are not provided, so you must bring your own for the full day. There are no shops or cafes in the highlands, so plan accordingly.
