itinerary

Step-by-step itinerary

Day 1 — Explore South Coast waterfalls and beaches

  • Visit Seljalandsfoss waterfall
  • Walk behind Seljalandsfoss falls
  • Hike to Glufrabui waterfall gorge
  • See Skogafoss waterfall from below
  • Climb stairs to Skogafoss observation deck
  • Lunch at Bistro Bar near Skogafoss
  • Visit Dyrholaey rock formation and lighthouse
  • Explore Reynisfjara black sand beach
  • Walk trail to Solheimajokull glacier
  • Touch and feel Solheimajokull ice

The first thing I remember is the sound — not the roar you’d expect, but this low, steady rush behind Seljalandsfoss. Our guide, Jón, grinned when he handed out rain ponchos. “Trust me,” he said. He was right. We crept along the path behind the waterfall, and the spray hit my face like cold needles. My boots squelched in the mud and I could taste minerals in the air. I didn’t even try to take photos — just stood there for a second, soaked and kind of weirdly happy about it.

After that we wandered off to Gljúfrabúi. It’s hidden in a gorge — you have to squeeze between wet rocks and hope your jacket’s zipped up tight. Jón told us locals call it “the secret one.” The light inside was greenish and soft, and for a minute it was just us and the water thundering down. Then back on the road: sheep everywhere (they really do wander onto the highway), and endless fields with these purple lupines waving in the wind.

Skógafoss was next — bigger than I expected, with mist so thick it got into my nose. There were rainbows caught in it if you looked sideways. We climbed up this staircase (way more steps than I thought) for a view over everything: river, cliffs, sky all mashed together. Lunch after at some little bistro nearby; I had soup that tasted like dill and something smoky I couldn’t place.

Dyrhólaey had these wild Atlantic winds that made me laugh out loud because my hat almost flew away. The lighthouse looked lonely against all that black sand stretching forever below. At Reynisfjara Beach we watched waves slam into those basalt columns — honestly kind of scary how strong they are. Someone tried to pronounce “Sólheimajökull” (not me) and Jón just shook his head, smiling. We walked right up to Sólheimajökull Glacier after; touching that ancient ice felt stranger than I thought it would — rougher, colder, almost alive under my palm.
