The experience
You arrive at Akureyri port and your guide meets you for pickup in a comfortable minibus. The route follows Eyjafjörður, one of Iceland's longest fjords, to Goðafoss waterfall: a site with deep historical weight in Iceland. The guide watches for rainbows and helps you frame the best shots. Photography stops are built into the pacing throughout the day.
From there, the tour moves into the Lake Mývatn basin, where the landscape shifts into something otherworldly. You'll see Skútustaðagígar, the pseudo craters: a phenomenon so rare it appears on only a handful of places on Earth, including Hawaii, the Azores, and Mars. Dimmuborgir, a sprawl of jagged lava formations, comes next. The twisted rock draws crowds for its Game of Thrones filming locations, but the guide will point you toward the quieter corners. A stop at Grjótagjá cave lets you stand between the European and American continental plates and photograph the hot blue river running through it. The geothermal area at Hverir shows you smoking fumaroles and boiling mud pots up close. The ground itself is alive here.
The tour ends at Mývatn Nature Baths, where you can soak in the geothermal water and steam before heading back to the port. WiFi is available on the minibus, and the Cruise Ship Return Guarantee means you'll make your departure on time.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Godafoss waterfall and why does the guide stop there?
Godafoss is a major waterfall with historical significance in Iceland. The guide stops to let you photograph it and watch for rainbows that sometimes appear in the mist.
Can I actually stand between the European and American tectonic plates on this tour?
Yes, at Grjótagjá cave you can stand on the continental rift between the two plates and take a photo there. The cave also contains a hot blue river.
What are the pseudo craters at Lake Mývatn?
Skútustaðagígar are pseudo craters: a rare geological formation found in only a few places worldwide, including Iceland, Hawaii, the Azores, and Mars. They form differently from true volcanic craters.
Do I need to bring anything for the Mývatn Nature Baths?
Bring your own swimwear and towel. The entry fee to the baths is not included in the tour price, so you pay it separately if you choose to bathe.
How does the tour timing work with cruise ship arrivals and departures?
You choose a departure time when you book that matches when your ship arrives. The tour runs eight hours and returns you to Akureyri port in time to reboard before your ship leaves.
