The experience
“You’re not scared of heights, right?” That’s what our guide, Einar, asked as we shuffled out onto the Bolafjall viewing platform. I said no, but my knees had other ideas. The wind up there is something else: sharp and salty, with that cold smell you get only this close to the Arctic. Below us, Bolungarvík looked tiny, just a handful of red roofs and fishing boats against all that blue-grey water. Einar pointed out where his grandfather used to fish. He seemed proud and a little wistful at once.
We’d started early from the Ísafjörður port (the cruise ship still visible behind us for a while), winding through that long tunnel under the mountain. I kept thinking about how people here used to row out into these freezing fjords in open boats. We saw one of those old fisherman’s huts later, grass growing right up the sides and everything smelling faintly of earth and salt cod. There was a quietness inside that felt almost heavy. Maybe it was just my imagination or maybe it was respect for all those hard winters.
The drive to Dynjandi is longer than you expect, not boring though. The landscape changes every few minutes: sudden green valleys, then cliffs so sheer they look fake. When we finally got there, I could hear the waterfall before I saw it. It’s huge but not loud exactly… more like steady thunder in your chest. The spray caught the light and made tiny rainbows over mossy rocks. I didn’t even try to take a perfect photo. Just stood there until my fingers went numb from the cold mist. Honestly, I still think about that view when things get noisy back home.
