The experience
The day starts at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site where the Vikings established the world's first parliament in 930 AD. The ground beneath your feet marks the boundary where two tectonic plates meet (the Eurasian and North American) a visible reminder of the geological forces that shaped Iceland. From there, the route heads to Friðheimar, an eco-area where you'll learn how geothermal heat powers organic vegetable farming year-round, then sit down to lunch in the greenhouse restaurant.
The Golden Circle proper takes in three natural landmarks in sequence. Geysir is home to Strokkur, which erupts every 5 to 10 minutes, sending plumes of water and steam skyward. Gullfoss comes next: a waterfall 32 meters high across two cascading tiers, fed by the river Hvítá flowing from Langjökull glacier. Then Kerið, a volcanic crater lake formed 6,500 years ago, sits at the northern end of a row of craters called Tjarnarhólar. Each stop is a distinct landscape, and the private vehicle means you move at your own pace between them.
The tour ends at Blue Lagoon, where the mineral-rich geothermal water is known for leaving skin soft and revitalized. Your entry includes a towel, bathrobe, slippers and your choice of first drink. The water's properties (mineral salts and healing qualities) aren't found anywhere else in the world. An optional dinner reservation at the Lava Restaurant with sparkling wine can be arranged at checkout. Hotel pickup and drop-off bookend the day, and the entire outing runs 11 to 12 hours.
