Step-by-step itinerary
Explore Budapest ruin bars and culture
- Visit unique nightlife spots
- Explore legendary ruin bars
The experience
The ruin bars started as a way to use empty buildings across Budapest, and they've become the city's most distinctive nightlife. You'll walk through courtyards and spaces filled with street art, vintage furniture and creative installations: each one different from the last. Your guide is a local who knows the history of how these places came to be and what they mean to Budapest now, and they'll explain the drinking culture that built them.
Along the way you'll taste two of Hungary's most famous drinks: Pálinka, a strong fruit brandy, and Unicum, a herbal liqueur with a bitter edge. To settle your stomach between tastings, you'll grab lángos, a fried bread street food, from a vendor in the district. The whole thing takes three to three and a half hours, and because it's private, you set the rhythm. If one bar catches your eye or you want to linger on a particular street, you can. Your guide adjusts to what you want to see.
Pickup is included, and the guide speaks English. The tour runs in all weather, so dress for the season. Bottled water comes with you, and all the areas you'll visit are wheelchair accessible.

Which Hungarian drinks will I taste on the tour?
You'll sample Pálinka, a strong fruit brandy, and Unicum, a herbal liqueur. Both are iconic to Hungarian drinking culture, and your guide will explain their history and how they're traditionally enjoyed.
How long does the tour take?
The tour runs three to three and a half hours, moving at your own pace through the district. Because it's private, you can adjust the speed depending on which bars and streets you want to explore.
