The experience

Three hours covers the Castle Area's main landmarks without rushing. After pickup from your hotel, you walk through the Castle Garden Bazaar's neo-renaissance gardens and into Buda Castle itself, where the guide explains how the Royal Palace survived centuries of conflict and rebuilding. You'll see one of Budapest's most recognizable statues and learn about King Matthias, the legendary Hungarian ruler it commemorates.

From there, the route follows the cobbled streets of the historic quarter down to Matthias Church, where your entrance ticket is waiting. The church's Gothic spires and ornate interior are yours to explore without a separate queue. The final stop is Fishermen's Bastion, the white stone terrace overlooking the Danube. From here you see across to Pest's architecture on the far bank. A cafe break with coffee, tea and snacks happens somewhere in the flow of the morning.
