The Experience

"Most of these planes, I flew them myself," one of the guides told us while pointing to a Tupolev Tu-154 parked on the tarmac. That's the thing about Aeropark — it's not some sterile display. The people walking you through are former pilots who actually know what they're talking about. The museum sits right next to Terminal 2 at Budapest Liszt Ferenc International Airport, so it's easy to reach if you're passing through, but it's also worth a trip on its own if you're spending time in the city. You get to walk inside the cockpits of planes that flew Soviet routes for decades, sit in the captain's seat, and hear stories from someone who was actually up there.

The aircraft collection spans the Cold War era — Ilyushin Il-18s, Antonov An-2s, a Mil Mi-2 helicopter, and several others scattered across the open-air grounds. Some you can only see from outside, but others open up for you to climb inside. The Cessna flight simulator is free to use, which is a nice touch; they're planning to add an Airbus A320 simulator later, though that one will cost extra. Between the planes and the simulator, you're looking at a couple of hours if you want to move at a reasonable pace and actually absorb what you're seeing. The souvenir shop has aviation memorabilia from MALÉV, the old Hungarian airline, plus aircraft models and books if you want to take something home.

Aeropark runs daily from late March through late October, then weekends only for the rest of the year. Parking is free if you drive, or you can take bus 200E from Kőbánya-Kispest metro station or directly from Terminal 2 — get off at the first stop after the terminal and follow the sidewalk. The skip-the-line ticket means you don't queue at the gate; you walk straight in. There's a café on-site with coffee, tea, beer and light snacks, so you're not stuck without options if you get hungry.
