The experience

The tour starts at the cruise ship dock and heads east across the island, stopping along the way for photographs of the landscape. Once you reach Oakridge, you board a water taxi and enter the mangrove tunnel: a narrow passage through dense forest that opens onto the water. The route is built around what you see from the boat and what you find waiting in Punta Gorda, the village at the end of it.

Punta Gorda is where the tour shifts from scenery to culture. You walk through the Garifuna village, visit shops, and stop at the Garifuna Cultural Center to learn about the traditions and history of the people who live there. The guide explains what you're seeing as you move through the streets. The whole experience is framed around seeing Roatan through local eyes rather than through the standard cruise-ship itinerary.

The four-hour window covers the drive out, the water taxi passage, time in the village and at the cultural center, and the return to the dock. Private transportation in an air-conditioned vehicle is included, so you're not sharing the ride with other groups.
