The experience
If you have a free afternoon in the highlands and want to move through actual forest instead of following a road, this hike uses the lower slopes of Atitlán Volcano as its spine. You'll walk through three distinct forest types (tropical rainforest, high alpine tropical forest, and paths along the lake shore) each one supporting different birds and wildlife. The waterfall at the end is fed by water that runs down from the volcano itself, and you get to swim there once you reach it.
The hike takes four hours total with a live guide who speaks English or Spanish. The pace is steady but not rushed, and snacks are provided along the way. This area is known for bird diversity, so if you bring binoculars or a camera with a decent zoom, you'll have plenty of chances to use them. The terrain is uneven and involves climbing, so the operator asks for at least moderate fitness, not a scramble, but not a flat walk either.
What’s included
- A live guide in English or Spanish.
- snacks during the hike.
- access to the waterfall and swimming area.
