Step-by-step itinerary
Artisanal fishing experience on Lake Atitlan
- Meet guide at Xocolatl workshop
- Travel by Kayuko to fishing area
- Learn bait and fishing net techniques
- Try fishing yourself
- Return to San Juan La Laguna
- Explore town and market
The experience
You start at Xocolatl, a chocolate workshop near the San Juan La Laguna dock, where your guide meets you before heading to the water. From there, a local fisherman takes you out on his kayuko, a traditional paddle boat, to the fishing grounds a few minutes away. This is not a demonstration: you'll learn the actual methods residents have used for years, handling the bait, understanding which nets work where, and making your own casts into the water. Your guide stays beside you the whole time, translating and explaining what the fisherman shows you.
The fishing itself is the core of the activity. You'll see how locals prepare their bait, learn the technique for throwing the net so it spreads and sinks correctly, and get chances to try it yourself. The fisherman adjusts your grip and timing, and the guide fills in the details about why the lake's depth and currents matter to where fish gather. It's interactive enough that you're doing the work, not watching someone else do it.
On the return to San Juan, the lake opens up: you see the three volcanoes across the water from the boat. Once back on shore, you have time to walk through the town, visit its market and buy handicrafts directly from makers: prices are lower here than in tourist zones. The whole outing runs two to three hours from start to finish.

Is this one for you?You do the fishing yourself under the fisherman's guidance rather than watching a demonstration, so this suits anyone who wants hands-on practice over passive observation. The activity is private and runs two to three hours, fitting a free afternoon or morning without dominating your whole day on the lake.
Top questions
What's the difference between artisanal fishing and the commercial fishing you see on bigger lakes?
Artisanal fishing on Lake Atitlan uses small boats, hand-thrown nets and techniques passed down through families rather than industrial equipment. Local fishermen know specific spots and seasons by experience, and the catch stays small and sustainable. It's how residents have fed their communities for centuries.
Do I need fishing experience to join this activity?
No. The fisherman and guide teach you the techniques from the start, and you learn by doing. The guide explains everything in Spanish and translates, so you understand the process even if you've never fished before.
What happens if the weather turns bad while we're on the water?
The activity runs in typical weather for the region. If conditions become unsafe, the guide and fisherman will return to shore. Lifejackets are provided for everyone on the boat.
Is San Juan La Laguna easy to reach if I'm staying elsewhere on the lake?
San Juan La Laguna is on Lake Atitlan's shore and accessible by local boat transport from other towns around the lake. Public transportation options run nearby, though you may want to arrange pickup with the operator depending on where you're staying.
