The experience
The tour starts at the cruise port (either Puerto Quetzal or Marina Pez Vela), and the drive to Iximche takes two and a half hours. You'll climb from the hot Pacific lowlands into Guatemala's cool highlands, watching the landscape shift as the guide explains the country's history and culture along the way. This elevation change is the reason the site feels so different from the port: Iximche sits high enough that the air itself changes.
At the ruins, a guide specialized in archeology and history walks you through pyramids built by the Maya and ceremonial altars still in active use. Contemporary Maya people visit Iximche to perform ceremonies (petitions, gratitude offerings, rituals to their ancestors), and if local people permit it, you may witness one. The guide answers questions about the site's full history: wars, conquests, betrayals, and the kings who ruled before 1524, when Spanish conquerors arrived.
After the site, you'll have free time and lunch in Pueblo Real in Tecpán, then head back to the port. The whole tour runs seven to eight hours, timed so you're back before the ship sets sail. Bottled water is provided throughout. The guide speaks English or Spanish.
