The experience

The guide picks you up at your hotel and drives you to small towns around Antigua where locals eat, not where tour buses stop. You taste shucos (Guatemalan sandwiches layered with meat, cheese and spices) gringas (cheese and meat-filled tortillas), and churros made to a recipe the vendor has held for years. Each stop is a family business, and the guide knows which ones keep their prep surfaces clean and their ingredients fresh, so you get the real thing without the worry that comes with street food in an unfamiliar place.

The tour runs about three hours and starts at 7 pm, when locals are eating dinner and the streets around the markets are still busy. You'll meet other travelers on the same route, and the guide talks through the history and culture of each town as you move between stops. Transport, all the food you taste, water, local soft drinks, beer and rum are included in the price.
