The Experience

We tumbled out of the van near Annandale Falls and right away I caught that sweet, earthy smell—like wet leaves and something spicy underneath. The falls weren’t huge but the sound filled the whole space, bouncing off the rocks. Some local kids were showing off with big jumps into the pool. Our guide, Devon, grinned and said he’d done it once but “only because I lost a bet.” I just dipped my toes in (cold!) and watched a woman selling nutmeg necklaces laugh with a group from Trinidad.

After that we wound up through these steep green hills to Grand Etang. The air changed up there—cooler, kind of misty. There was a guy roasting cashews by the entrance (I bought some; burned my tongue). Devon pointed out the volcanic lake and told us about the Mona monkeys hanging around. One actually came close enough for a photo, though it was more interested in someone’s banana than posing. We wandered a bit while locals showed off cinnamon bark and cocoa pods—honestly I didn’t expect to care but it smelled so good I wanted to bring half of it home.

The river tubing part was last—Balthazar River is not as wild as I pictured but still fast enough to get your heart going. They handed us helmets and life jackets (mine felt too tight at first but you forget about it once you’re floating). The water was cold, but after five minutes you stop noticing because you’re laughing too hard or ducking under low branches. Devon kept shouting “watch your bum!” every time we hit a rock—I still think about that view downstream with all that tangled green overhead. It ended too soon for me, honestly.
