The Experience

The first thing I noticed was how quiet it got as we rolled away from Mont Hartman’s entrance—just the hum of our e-bikes and this weirdly sweet, earthy smell after last night’s rain. Our guide, Janelle, waved us over to a patch of shade where some goats were eyeing us like we were the entertainment. She started telling us about the reserve—how some of the trees are older than her grandma—and I tried to listen but honestly, I was distracted by these tiny green lizards darting around my feet. The e-bike felt almost too easy at first (I kept waiting for my legs to burn), but it let me look around more instead of just focusing on not dying on a hill.

We followed Janelle along a narrow coastal road that twisted between palms and little bursts of color from roadside flowers—bougainvillea maybe? I’m not great with plants. At one point she stopped us at this lookout near Launce Aux Epines, where you could see the sea stretching forever and a couple of fishing boats bobbing in the distance. Someone in our group tried to pronounce “Launce Aux Epines” and totally butchered it; Janelle laughed so hard she nearly dropped her water bottle. There was this salty breeze up there that made my shirt stick to my back and for a minute nobody said anything—we just stared out and let it sink in.

The last stretch took us down towards Lance Aux Epines Beach. The sand was warm (not hot enough to burn your feet, just kind of cozy), and the water looked fake—so clear you could count your toes underwater. We parked the bikes under some palms and just flopped onto our backs for a bit, letting everything slow down. I grabbed a quick swim before we headed back; still thinking about that feeling of floating with nothing but sky above you. If I ever come back to Grenada, I want that exact moment again—even if I still can’t pronounce half these place names right.
