The Experience

The White Tower sits at the water's edge, the city's most recognizable landmark and the starting point of the route. From there the tour moves inland to the Church of Saint Demetrios, the oldest and largest early Christian church in Thessaloniki and the most important one to the city itself. Both stops anchor the Roman and early Byzantine periods that shaped the place.

The Heptapyrgion fortress stands on the northeastern corner of the Acropolis, a Byzantine and Ottoman-era stronghold that lets you read the city's medieval layers. From the fortress you walk the Walls of Thessaloniki itself — the actual medieval fortification that ringed the city — and the guide points out how the structure changed hands and how each civilization left its mark on the stone. The views from the walls show you Thessaloniki from angles most visitors never reach.

The Arch of Galerius closes the route downtown, a Roman triumphal arch with marble sculptures that was part of the Roman emperor Galerius's larger complex. The guide walks you through what the arch meant in its time and how it fits into the city's Roman period.
