The experience
The minibus collects you from your hotel and drives you up to Zia's center, leaving you free to discover the village on your own terms. Zia clings to the southern slope of Mount Dikeos at 846 meters above sea level, and that elevation is what makes the sunset work: the view stretches across the Aegean to the islands of Kalymnos and Pserimos, and on clear days reaches the Turkish coast beyond. The village itself has kept its traditional character despite the summer crowds: narrow cobblestone streets lined with small shops selling local products, arts and crafts, and a string of taverns with terraces built for exactly this moment.
You have approximately two and a half hours to move through the village at whatever pace suits you. Most visitors spend time in one of the traditional taverns, where the homemade lemonade is famous enough that it appears on nearly every menu. The atmosphere is relaxed. There is no schedule to keep, no group to stay with, no guide narrating the stops. You can sit on a terrace for an hour watching light change across the water, or climb higher into the village to find Kefalovrisi, the well-known freshwater spring that still supplies the settlement. The minibus returns you to your hotel after the sun has set.
