Spearfishing in Chania is a hands-on activity where you learn to freedive and hunt fish with an experienced instructor on a private RIB boat, then grill your catch on board. You'll use a speargun in the water while the instructor demonstrates technique and manages safety. Up to six people can join, though only two can spearfish at once with the guide. The experience runs half-day or full-day, includes all gear and snacks, and ends with a meal you've caught yourself.

The experience

Panagiotis has been fishing since he was five and trained as a freediver-instructor. He'll teach you to hold your breath, move through the water, and read where fish hide. You don't need experience, even if you've never held a speargun, you can watch him hunt while you snorkel, then join him for the meal. The boat stops at a spot he knows, and you'll get a mask, snorkel, fins and speargun. The water is where the real work happens: you're not watching from the deck, you're underwater doing it.

Up to two people can spearfish at the same time with the instructor guiding you. The rest of your group snorkels nearby or observes from the boat. Once you've caught fish (or Panagiotis has caught them for you), the boat becomes the kitchen. He grills the catch on board and you all eat together, tasting what you pulled from the sea. This is not a tour of Chania. It's a lesson in how a local fisherman works, and the meal is the proof.

You'll choose between a half-day or full-day trip when you book. Both include all the gear, snacks while you're on the water, and the instruction. The boat holds up to six or seven people comfortably, so families and small groups can book together. Public transport reaches the departure point, and service animals are welcome on board.

Two people can spearfish at once with the instructor. The rest of your group (up to six or seven total on the boat) can snorkel in the same area or stay on board and watch.

What happens if we don't catch anything?

Panagiotis will catch fish for the group if the spearfishing isn't successful. Everyone eats together on the boat regardless, so the meal is guaranteed.

What gear do I need to bring?

You don't bring anything for the water. The boat provides masks, snorkels, fins and spearguns. Bring a towel, sunscreen and a change of clothes. Snacks and drinks are included on board.
