Scuba Diving in Kallithea: PADI Discover Scuba with Instructor
You stand in water you can walk out of, then descend to see octopus, grouper and cuttlefish in their own space.
PADI Discover Scuba is a beginner diving experience in Kallithea, Rhodes where you learn basic skills in shallow water with an instructor, then make your first reef dive to 6–7 meters. Hotel pickup, full equipment, snorkelling time and a qualified guide in your language are included; the program takes about 6 hours and ends with a certificate of completion.
The Experience
If you've never dived before, the morning starts on the boat with a theory lesson and basic skills practice in water shallow enough to stand in. Your instructor walks you through breathing underwater, mask clearing and how to move with fins—the things that feel strange on land but make sense the moment you try them. Once you're comfortable, you descend to the reef itself, staying at 6–7 meters for about 25 minutes while your instructor points out what's moving in front of you.
The Kallithea reef holds more than the guidebook promises. Schools of bream and damselfish move in formation; cuttlefish change colour as they hunt; octopus hide in crevices and watch you back. Grouper, squid and moray eels are common sightings. On better days, turtles drift through or a monk seal passes—the sea life here has recovered noticeably over recent years. Your instructor knows the reef and the creatures, and shares what to look for and where to find it.
After the dive, you have time to snorkel or swim off the boat, grab a snack from the bar, or book an additional dive if you want more time underwater. The boat picks you up from your hotel in the morning and returns you at the end of the day. You'll receive a PADI Discover Scuba certificate when you finish, and optional photographs of your first dive are available to buy.

What do I actually do on a Discover Scuba dive?
You spend the first part of the morning learning theory and practising basic skills—breathing, mask clearing, hand signals—in shallow water where you can stand. Then your instructor takes you down to the reef at 6–7 metres for about 25 minutes, where you stay close to them and watch the fish and other sea life while you get used to being underwater.
Is Kallithea reef good for a first dive, or is it too crowded?
Kallithea reef is designed for beginners and has recovered well over recent years, so there's plenty to see—schools of fish, cuttlefish, octopus, grouper and moray eels are regular sightings, and you have a real chance of spotting turtles or monk seals. The reef is not a famous crowded spot; it's a working dive site where instructors know the layout and the creatures.
Do I need to bring anything, or is the equipment provided?
All scuba equipment is included—wetsuit, tank, regulator, mask and fins. Bring a swimsuit and a towel; everything else is supplied. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange transport yourself.
Can children do this dive?
Yes, children from age 3 are welcome. The Discover Scuba program is designed for beginners of any age, and the shallow-water start means younger divers can build confidence before going deeper.
What languages do the instructors speak?
The instructor team speaks English, Italian, French, German and several other languages, so you can request your preferred language when you book.
What happens if I want to dive again after the first one?
After your first dive and the surface interval, you can book an additional dive on the same day. The boat stays out, and you have time to snorkel or swim between dives, or relax on deck with a snack from the bar.
